Monday 2/14 New Orleans to Houston via Galveston

Breakfast at U-Please-Restaurant (under new management) on St.Charles – KCD receives Happy Valentines Day – neighborhood eatery

Drive I-10 through Baton Rouge and Lafayette.

Looking for gas, stopped in Rayne, LA “frog capital of world” and murals everywhere, all featuring frogs. What a marketing genius to have this as a brand for an otherwise undistinguished little town.

Later, Billedeaux’s Cajun Kitchen, in St. Charles, LA,  butcher and food – everything pigs, rabbits, deer, boudin, for Cajun food. Talked with a mother and sons from Iowa, LA (pronounced “ioway”).

Left I-10 at Winne, TX to take Rte 124 to Gulf shore along Bolivar peninsula heavily damaged by hurricanes. Houses on tall stilts scattered about.

Then,  to Port Bolivar ferry to Galveston

Drove along Galveston beach front. Lots of beach and lots of beach hotels and dives. Walked around historic district, The Strand. This is a substantial business district on higher land that  survived the great storm of 1900.

Continued to Houston. Stayed at Holiday Inn hotel near Astrodome.
