Philadelphia and Washington – 2/29-3/1/2019

A long weekend jaunt to Philadelphia and Washington DC.

Friday 3/29/2019

Left Hudson in time to arrive at meet Noah at U. Penn. by 12:30. We toured around this big campus on foot. Stopped in his dorm room on the 22nd floor of a high rise dormitory. Very 1970s throughout excepting all of the security at the front door.

Walked across the campus. Much bigger with more diverse architecture than Cambridge. Lunch at a campus eatery at Drexel just a few blocks away. Noah is majoring in PP&E (politics, philosophy and economics). Has joined a salsa dance group. Recital coming up in May.

Possible Ugly Building

On to Silver Spring MD and Betsy and Harvey

On the way….

This used to be on the front porch. Long time marker that we had arrived at the right address.
Lena was around.

Dinner at home. Harvey had cooked up some noodles. Lena was there too.

Saturday 3/30/2019

Late start, then off to the Udvar-Hadzy Space Museum in Chantilly VA.

Harvey used a wheelchair for the first time with us. His walking is quite limited so this really makes it possible form him to participate.

Vietnamese Food at Eden Center in Falls Church VA

Rear entrance.

Vegetarian fare at Than Van Restaurant – lots of good talk with Harvey and Betsy.

Sunday 3/31/2019 – Washington Museums and Dinner with Bob Greenstein and Elissa Parker

Parked next to National Building Museum. Walked around from there.

National Building Museum

Still a very striking experience to walk into the great hall.

See a posting on American Delusions – Evicted – the book and exhibition

The great hall is used for many art, kids, family activities including just coming for a picnic.

An interesting exhibit about the Manhattan Project and urban design.

Pre-fab houses were a key innovation.

Baltimore’s Movie Theaters – a bit overwhelming in scale…..

National Gallery of Art – West Wing – Tintoretto

I was really struck by the vigor of the painting and the organization of the figures in the scenes.

Found this winter scene after leaving the Tintoretto exhibit.

National Portrait Gallery

Coffee break

A new entry in the portrait gallery.

I liked this painting in part because it reminded me of one from Amsterdam.
